150 years of SMS group

A long-standing partner of metallurgical industry of Russia and CIS

SMS group is a group of companies internationally active in plant construction and mechanical engineering for the steel and nonferrous metals industry. Through mergers, acquisitions, and the growth and development of the company itself, SMS ranks as one of the world leading companies in its field.

SMS was founded as Carl Eberhard Weiss set up his forge in 1871 in Siegen, Germany. In the 21st century, the company was widely known for its main divisions: SMS Siemag AG – with the expertise in steelmaking and flat rolling equipment – and SMS Meer GmbH – specialized in long product and forging plants. In 2015, they merged to SMS group GmbH.

Today SMS group is in the fourth generation of family ownership and has some 14 000 employees who generate worldwide sales of more than EUR 2.8 billion. As Leading Partner in the World of Metals, the group applies its technical expertise to create innovative, pioneering solutions for its customers across the complete value chain.

The history of SMS group in Russia and CIS roots back to 1932 when the first rolling mills were supplied to the Russian Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK). Since then, the company implemented in the region such highlight projects as PL/TCM at MMK, plate mill “MKS 5000” at OMK, large diameter pipe works “Vysota 239” at Chelyabinsk Pipe-Rolling Plant, “Rossiyanka” blast furnace at NLMK and many more.

At present, SMS group is represented in Russia and CIS by SMS group LLC, which has united all regional representative offices, subsidiaries and service workshops of SMS group and Paul Wurth. The team of SMS group LLC brings a profound commercial and technical expertise and offers the all-round elaboration of the projects in the phases of sales and execution in close cooperation with the customers.

Presently SMS group LLC has 1700 employees who serve over 100 customers all around the region.

SMS group LLC Chelyabinsk

Since 2008 Chelyabinsk, office of SMS group LLC coordinates all service activities, supplies spare parts and technical outsourcing in Russia and CIS. The central workshop is located in Chelyabinsk also. It makes possible to carry out repairs and maintenance works of different components locally.

SMS group LLC Moscow

The company head office, started in Moscow in 2000 as liaison between the customers of the CIS region and the SMS companies. Today it is responsible for all business activities of SMS group in CIS region: from feasibility studies and initial construction of metallurgical plants, the modernization of existing facilities to 24/7 full-service and the latest in digitalization.

SMS group LLC Paul Wurth

SMS group LLC leads Paul Wurth Metallurgical Service LLC in Kaluga. It offers services in the field of blast furnace and coke production. They focus on project management, engineering and manufacturing of hydraulic, electric and automation systems for ironmaking facilities, and provide an extensive range of services, from spares to the repair of components.
